Kung Fu is the term known to represent the martial arts developed in China. There are countless styles of Kung Fu, but they can be divided by Northern style or Southern style, and internal and external. Hailing from the more mountainous, rocky region of Northern China, Northern style Kung Fu is represenative of kicks and acrobatic techniques. Southern style comprises more “close quarter” techniques, with shorter strikes and low stances. Southern style was developed more among populous cities and among fishermen who had less room to practice. Within these classifications, there are animal styles as well as variations and adaptations from families and villages throughout China. Internal and external refers to drawing upon inner strength and power as opposed to physical strength of external force.
Heavily woven into the practice of Kung Fu are principles of fellowship and respect. A true practitioner of Kung Fu is not boastful but reserved and is always mindful of others.
